According to The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, 75 percent of women will experience painful sex at some point in their lives; for some this is temporary, for others, it is a long-term condition. Sexual issues can cause tremendous stress not only on the individual but also on marriages and intimate relationships.
Up until this point, the options for treatment have been very limited and largely unsuccessful. Some of these treatments include pelvic physical therapy and prescription topical creams that provide a numbing sensation but also reduce pleasure.
According to the National Pain Institute, 40 percent of women suffer from some form of female sexual dysfunction (FSD). The majority of research and clinical trials on FSD focuses on psychological causes. FSD can involve reduced sex drive, difficulty becoming aroused, vaginal dryness, lack of climax and decreased sexual satisfaction. Victims of sexual assault and abuse have even higher numbers of sexual dysfunction and often painful intercourse.
Many victims of sexual assault experience some form of PTSD, making sexual intercourse and sexual climax difficult or even impossible. The psychological state of mind has a major impact on whether an individual can reach climax during intercourse.
In 2016, I began researching the benefits of cannabidiol. After learning about the way in which CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), producing anti-inflammatory benefits as well as anti-anxiety benefits, I set out on a mission to help women and launched my company Privy Peach. I developed a line of CBD-infused intimate products, including a CBD-infused personal lubricant and a CBD tincture coined “Break Free” named after my own personal experience with CBD.
I was a victim of rape in 2013. The physical effects and the emotional issues from the assault were life-altering. I ended up having major internal trauma, partially due to being assaulted while on my period and having a tampon forced and lodged high within my body, causing vaginal tears, on top of bruising and torn and weakened pelvic muscles. My body also formed a cyst within the weeks after the assault from the physical trauma which ruptured, causing severe internal bleeding that left me hospitalized for two days. I experienced panic attacks and nightmares for several months following. I was so embarrassed to even talk about what actually happened to me. It was humiliating.
I suffered from severe and chronic pelvic pain for close to three years after the event. The doctors suggested pelvic physical therapy to help strengthen the muscle that had been torn and prescribed me numbing medications. I no longer enjoyed sex, I no longer was able to achieve climax through intercourse and lost all sexual desire. I can’t tell you how many times I went to the bathroom and cried after sex due to the pain and frustration. The anxiety surrounding sex was debilitating.
I finally recovered from my physical injuries years after the assault, but the psychological impact still lingered.
I have never really been able to consume THC even medicinally due to the impact it had on worsening my anxiety. When I heard that CBD could help regulate anxiety without the high, I had to try it. The results were amazing.
I tried a CBD tincture under my tongue and within about 30 minutes of using it, I just had a general sense of well-being, my nerves were calm and I was still completely clear-headed. This was nothing like the mind-numbing calm and brain fog that I received when I would take my doctor-prescribed anxiety medication.”
A few days later, I took the tincture before sex. For the first time in years I was able to relax and easily reach climax from sex.
CBD works with the body's endocannabinoid system to help the body retain anandamide, a neurotransmitter whose root "ananda" means “bliss.” CBD is an inhibitor of the fatty acid amides hydrolase, which breaks down anandamide. CBD stops hydrolase from breaking down anandamide.
Anandamide is constantly working to bring about a state of balance to the human body and mind. Mood, happiness, fear, anxiety and ability to endure stress are all regulated by the endocannabinoid system. The body’s ability to regulate inflammation is also effected by the body’s production and storage of anandamide. Many people have begun using CBD as a supplement and swear by its physiological and phycological benefits.
I developed a CBD-infused intimate oil that, when applied topically during or prior to intercourse, can reduce inflammation and tension. This helps signal the body to reduce inflammation and increases natural lubrication and blood flow. It has been a life-changer for many people.
I remember the very exact moment that I found my calling, I literally cried. I finally discovered my life’s purpose and the reason why I went through all the things that I went through. I could finally turn the bad into good and change lives just like mine had been changed. It may not be a miracle, but the combination of consuming CBD and using CBD topically has certainly felt like one to me.
I also produced an intimate topical oil that amplifies pleasurable sensations by increasing blood flow with a natural blend of CBD and aphrodisiac essential oils that provide an entourage of sensations. Cannabis is an absolute game-changer when it comes to sexual health and wellness. The fact that CBD is becoming more mainstream is so exciting to me. I’ve seen very anti-cannabis people have their minds changed after seeing the impact that it has without being psychoactive. I truly believe it will only be a few short years before cannabis is widely accepted and implemented in many people's daily lives. I’m very proud for Privy Peach to be a major player in this CBD movement and making major strides in before uncharted territories.
